1. Gross Reservoir
Gross Reservoir is located in Boulder County and has 10.9 miles of shoreline. The reservoir is open for boating and paddle boarding the Friday of Memorial Day weekend through Sept. 30th. The Gross Reservoir expansion project is underway and will impact recreation and amenities for the foreseeable future. Due to the project and restricted access to certain areas, expect larger crowds than usual. For the most up-to-date information on the project, visit this site.

Parking
The North Shore Parking Lot is the only area available for parking during construction. This lot typically fills up early on weekends and remains full for most of the day. Once the lot is at capacity, visitors will be turned away. Plan to arrive before 10 a.m. on weekends for your best chance at securing a spot. There are covered picnic areas and vault toilets located near the parking lot.
Fees
There are no fees to paddleboard or park at Gross Reservoir.
Getting to the North Shore Parking Lot
From the Denver metro area:
- Take Highway 93 north from Golden to Highway 72.
- Turn left (west) on Highway 72 toward Pinecliffe and travel about 7.5 miles to County Road 77/Gross Dam Road. Turn right onto Gross Dam Road.
- Follow Gross Dam Road north to the stop sign. Turn right at the stop sign and continue on Gross Dam Road until you reach the North Shore Picnic Area parking lot.
- Note: due to heavy truck traffic and planned road construction on portions of Gross Dam Road, periodic, temporary lane closures and flaggers will be in place.
From Boulder:
- Take Flagstaff Road west until it turns into Gross Dam Road, and turn left into the parking area. Please be respectful of our neighbors and do not park in the neighborhood past the parking lot.
Hours of Operation
There’s a shuttle bus for the 2024 season that can take you down to the shore with your SUP. It runs Thursday-Monday from approximately 8 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. It picks up in the parking lot about every 30 minutes. Dogs are allowed to ride on the shuttle. You can also hike down to the shoreline on a steep single-track trail from the parking lot. The trail is approximately ⅓ mile in length. Carrying a SUP up or down this trail would be challenging, but it’s an option if you miss the shuttle.

Camping
There are 19 free first-come-first-serve designated campsites on the reservoir’s west side, with seven additional walk-in sites.
2. Brainard Lake
Brainard Lake is located just outside Ward, CO. It is one of five small lakes within the Brainard Lakes Recreation Area known for its stunning hiking trails. Brainard Lake is a 14-acre lake that is easily accessible by car. The other four lakes (Blue Lake, Mitchell Lake, Long Lake, and Lake Isabelle) are only accessible by foot, but all make for a fantastic day hike.

Parking
To park anywhere in the Brainard Lake Recreation area, you must make a timed entry reservation through recreation.gov. Tickets are released on a 15-day rolling basis throughout the open season.
Fees
Tickets are $14 for a one-day personal vehicle pass. America the Beautiful pass holders get a discount, but they still need to make a reservation. All fee information can be found on recreation.gov.
Hours of Operation
The seasonal gate at the Brainard Gateway Trailhead is open from approximately mid-June through mid-October, depending on the weather. You can check the status of that road here. You’ll want to arrive at the time shown on your parking reservation. Closing hours aren’t specified, but overnight parking isn’t allowed without an overnight permit.

Camping
The Pawnee Campground is available during the open season with a reservation. These reservations are hotly contested since this is the only campsite in the Brainard Lake Recreation Area. You can check availability and make a reservation on recreation.gov. Campsites range from $25-$50 per night.
3. Horsetooth Reservoir
Horsetooth Reservoir is located just west of Fort Collins, CO. It’s the third busiest reservoir in Colorado, with an estimated million visitors each year. The water can get choppy from boats, but there are plenty of quiet coves to explore. The views won’t disappoint as you paddle along the 25 miles of shoreline.

Parking and Fees
SUPs can launch from the shore at Inlet Bay, South Bay, Satanka Cove, and Sunrise Swim Beach. Before entering the park, you must purchase a daily entrance permit at gatehouses and self-serve stations. These permits are $10 for a daily pass or $100 for an annual.
Hours of Operation
There are no specified operating hours for paddle boarders as they are exempt from ANS inspections. Some gates close off the parking entrance areas after dark, but you can exit anytime.

There are two paddleboard rental options located at Horsetooth Reservoir:
- What’s SUP is located at South Bay, Sunrise Swim Beach, and Satanaka Cove
- SUP Horsetooth is located at the top of the boat ramp at 1020 Santanka Trail Bellvue, CO 80512

4. Dillon Reservoir
The Dillon Reservoir is located in gorgeous Summit County, Colorado. It’s the 7th largest reservoir in the state and is a top-rated destination during the summer and fall. Even though you may encounter some crowds initially, the reservoir is vast, and you can usually find quiet areas. There are even some islands, including Silver Dollar Island, that you can paddle out to.

Parking
Dillon Reservoir is easily accessible by car and has five main launching sites:
- Dillon Marina- One of the two launch sites where powerboats can access the reservoir. Parking is free, but I’d suggest to get there early to beat the crowds.
- Frisco Marina- This site also has powerboat access, which may make it one of the busiest launch locations. Parking fees vary depending on the day of the week and time of the year.
- Snake River Inlet- Parking is free at this seemingly least-used launch location. It’s located south of the town of Dillon and about halfway between Dillon and the Keystone Ski Resort.
- Blue River Inlet- This launch area is located at the Blue River Arm Trailhead off Swam Mountain Road between Breckenridge and Frisco and is another lesser-used spot that provides ample free parking.
- Dillon Dam Road- There is a day-use parking area near Giberson Bay along the Dillon Dam Road. The day fee for parking is $8, and parking is limited.
Fees
There are no fees to paddleboard on the reservoir (parking and rental fees are not included).

The reservoir is open 24 hours a day, year-round.

Camping
Overnight camping within the Dillon Reservoir Recreation Area is only permitted in designated U.S. Forest Service Campgrounds. 5. Piney Lake
Piney Lake is a small, serene lake with views that pack a punch. Located 12 miles outside Vail, Colorado, this little lake is part of the Piney River Ranch. Although the ranch hosts various events, the property is open to the public. A long, bumpy gravel road leads to Piney Lake, which is accessible by car, even though it can be slow going in parts.

I had my dogs on the water with no issues, but later, I saw on their website that pets aren’t allowed to be on SUPs. They seemingly don’t enforce that rule, but it is something to be aware of.

The ranch has a decent-sized free parking lot accommodating water activities, hiking and fishing, and lodge guests. It’s easy to get a spot on weekdays, but the lot likely fills up quickly on weekends.

Hours of Operation
The lake is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. unless there is an event, then the lake closes early at 4 p.m. Piney River Ranch is open seasonally from June 21st through the last Saturday in September.

Camping
Dispersed camping sites are scattered along Piney River Road on the way up to Piney River Ranch and nearby forest service roads. Cabins and glamping tents at the ranch can be reserved in advance on their website.
6. Turquoise Lake
Located 5 miles west of Leadville, Turquoise Lake is a gem you don’t want to miss. This lake used to host a turquoise mine, which is how it got its name. This area is heavily visited, especially during summer, but the lake always seems to remain quiet. Late summer and early fall are fantastic times to get your SUP out on this lake, which has aspen trees sprinkled along the shoreline. But keep in mind this lake sits around 10,000 feet in elevation and often sees snow by early October.

24/7 access, but day-use parking areas are open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. If parking at one of the boat ramps, verify their open hours, as they change depending on the season. A gate is locked across the road at closing time, preventing anyone from entering or exiting.

- Adventure Paddle Tours is located at 131 CO-91, Leadville, CO 80461, inside Bill’s Ski Shop.
Camping
Nine unique campgrounds are located around Turquoise Lake, each equipped with fire rings, picnic tables, vault toilets, and potable water. All of the campgrounds are located on the east side of the lake except May Queen, which sits alone on the west shore. There are also a large number of dispersed camping sites near the Turquoise Lake Recreation Area along CR-48.
7. Twin Lakes
This pair of large picture-perfect alpine lakes covers nearly 650 acres and reflects some of the nation’s highest peaks, including Mt. Elbert and La Plata Peak. The lower twin lake is the largest of the two and is connected to the upper twin lake by an inlet.

There’s an actual parking lot there, but you can also drive past it on a dirt road and park anywhere down by the water. The waterfront spots are a fun place to set up camp for the day!
Fees
Entry is free with a Colorado State Parks pass. An annual State Parks pass can also be purchased onsite for $80. Day passes are also available for $10 per vehicle.

The day-use park hours are from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, but the reservoir is open year-round, 24 hours a day, for approved activities.
SUP Rentals
- RIGS Fly Shop is located at 1075 Sherman St, Unit 101 Ridgeway, Colorado 81432. There are also paddleboard rental options nearby in Ouray.
Camping
There are three campgrounds in the State Park: Dakota Terraces, Elk Ridge, and Pa-co-chu-puk. These campgrounds require reservations that can be made up to 6 months in advance.
9. Alta Lakes
Alta Lakes are located about 10 miles south of Telluride and are the most breathtaking of the lakes on this list. Alta lakes are a series of three small alpine lakes that sit at 11,300 feet in elevation. They offer a one-of-a-kind SUP experience and boast calm, crystal-clear waters that look like glass as you glide across. Plus, the stunning backdrop created by Bald Mountain, Silver Mountain, and the Telluride Ski Resort. The access road to Alta Lakes is rough and narrow, so trailers and RV’s are not advised. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended, but do what you’re comfortable with and use caution. I took it slow in my Promaster and made it with no issues.

Note that rental services typically close during the winter, so having personal SUP equipment is a must if you’re planning to paddle beyond the milder seasons.

- Wear a Personal Flotation Device (PFD): Colorado State Law requires all stand-up paddleboarders to carry a PFD for each person on the SUP. Anyone under the age of 13 must wear the PFD at all times.
